2nd round of audience research

Here is our second round of audience research

After looking at our first round of audience research questions we looked at how many people's favourite bands were Indie. There were four people. So for our second round of audience research we only asked four people. Due to time constraints we did not get time to edit the other two people onto the end of the video, but this is what they said.

The first question: How many members do you expect to see in an Indie band?

One person said they liked to see four people.
The last person said they liked to see three people.

The second question: What do you expect to see in an Indie music video?

One person said they expect to see the band members having a lot of fun.
The last person said they expect to see the band performing.

The third question: Do you prefer to see the band or a narrative?

One person said they like to see a narrative as it is nice to see a story going with the lyrics.
The last person said they prefer to see the band as they get to know more about them.

The fourth question: How many songs do you expect to see on an album?

One person said they excpect to see at least 8.
The last person said they expect to see 12 maximum.

The fifth question: What do you expect to see as the front cover of an Indie cd?

One person said they like to see mild colours and something different.
The last person said they like to see the band members on the front looking happy and having fun.

The sixth question: What do you expect to see on an advert?

One person said they like to see the band or the cd cover. As long as they can tell who/what it is.
The last person said they like to what other people have said about the album = critics views.

The seventh question: What information do you like to see on an advert?

One person said they like to see what the album is called and when it is going to be out to buy.
The last person said they like to see where they can buy the album.

The final question: Do you like seeing the band on the advert?

One person said yes as then they can easilt tell who the band is.
The last person said yes also.

Once we collated our second round of audience research we realised that when we were creating our music  video we needed to make sure that:

  • It is really fun to watch
  • The band are included within the music video
  • You see the band performing without a narrative
  • There should be at least three or four members in the band
When creating our digipack we need to make sure that we include:
  • The digipack to be fun
  • To be a bit different to other digipacks
  • To have bright colours so that the digipack stands out
  • To have at least ten songs on the album
  • To possibly show the band on the front cover
When creating our advert we need to make sure we include:
  • Where we can buy the album from
  • When the album is out for sale
  • The band on the advert or the album cover on the advert
  • Reviews of the album
After analysing our audience research we can now begin to make our music video, digipakc and advert.

Costume

Costume

When filming our music video we want the band members to be wearing fun Indie clothing. We want the band members too look comfortable in their clothing as well as looking like a typical Indie band member. They can wear jeans, chinos and any type of fun clothing.

Above is an image of the typical type of clothing that the Ryli can wear in the music video as it is very laid back and 'Indieish'.

Above is an image that shows what the two female band members should be wearing. They should be very casual with the clothes that they should be wearing. Also, the above picture is a typical stereotype of Indie females.

Filming Progress

Filming Progress

After collecting our audience research we have realised that we need to re film the beginning of our music video. This is because the audience did not like the narrative and felt it would be more effective having more shots of the band performing. On Wednesday the 30th November 2011 we are going to re film the beginning. We are going to film the band having fun in the recording studio.

My design for the digipack and advertisement - Georgie

This is my design for the front cover of the digipack

The reason why I designed my Cd cover like this as I felt that it was very Indie and it reminded me of Noah and the What. Also, the colours are quite laid back and are typically conventions coloursof the Indie genre. However, I think I could have improved this design as the name of the band and the name of the album do not stand out very well and could be bolder than what they are. I got the photoframe idea off of the internet and as I had not used photoshop before I used this. However, I realsied this was not my own work. So I decided to go to a photoshop class, improve my skills and below is my version of the front cover of the digipak.

I like this design better than my original design as I felt it was more original and conformed to many conventions of the Indie genre. For example the text is fun like Indie band texts are. Also, the colours are very laid back like Indie band colours are. I have also included the record company in the bottom right hand corner as this is included on digipaks. I have also included images of the band so their album is easily recognisable to their audience. I have also included text at the top which tells the buyer that they will recieve a copy of the music video which will make them purchase it which is seen on many digipaks and is a typical convention.

Above is the first inlay that I would include in the digipak. Again it is very plain and simple to look at. I did this as I felt it was very Indie as most Indie digipaks, such as Noah and the Whale are simple. Also, this inlay includes thalf of the lyrics for Irony, the bands hit song. The next inlay includes the second half of the lyrics. I included lyrics in the inlay as this is a typical convention of Indie digipaks as The Wombats have done this in the first album, A Guide To Love Loss and Desperation.

This is the second half of the lyrics to the hit song Irony.

For some extra inlays I decided to have a profile of the band members. I did this as I felt this was unconventional as i have not seen this in many Indie band digipaks. Once again it is quite plain and simple, like Indie band digipaks. This has then kept the consistancy the same throughout the digipak. As Deray are a new band I felt it would be good for the audience to get to know the band better.

Again I have done another profile as I want our audience to get to know the band better.

Here is the last band profile Inlay.

This is my design for the CD. Most Indie bands have very plain cds. My initial design was to have brighter colours but I felt this would be more pop rather than Indie so I toned the colours down. I have used a gray colour as the background of the CD as the colour has been used throughout the digipak. I have included the band name and the album name on the CD so it is easily recognisable. Also, as the band are still knew I included the band members names so the audience could learn their names. The CD goes well with the rest of the digipak as the same colours have been used.

This is my version of the back cover for our digipak. Again it is very plain and simple, which is conventional for Indie bands. the back cover also matches the rest of the digipak so it all goes well together. I have also included the bar code as that is a convention of any digipak as is the website which I have included just above the bar code. The record company has also been added as again this is another convention of digipaks. I have also included a 3 shot image of the band as I felt it is important for the audience to always know what the band looks likes so they are recognisable.

This is my poster design for Deray. I have stuck to the same colour scheme as the digipak as I felt it would be easily recognisable for the audience and would therefore be very effective. I have also stuck to conventions as the band has their images on the poster so the audience will easily be able to recognise the band. I have also included where you can buy the album from, hmv, which means people who see the poster and want to buy the album will know where they can purchase it from. I have also included images of Facebook and Twitter as our target audience is you people and most people are signed up to social networking sites. This is also free publicity to us. We have again included the record company and the website. Also, at the top, I have included when the album goes on sale as people will then buy the album as soon as it goes on sale.

Here are some images of the drawings I made when designing my inlays.

As you can see my final design for the CD cover differs to my original plan above.

The above two drawings of the inlays are very similar to my final designs as they show an image os the band members and give information about them. However, they do differ as the background colour has changed as above I was going to use yellow, but on my final design I used a light brown colour, which matched the rest of the digipak.

Above is an image of me using photoshop on my laptop to edit my frontcover design for the digipak. In this image I was deciding where the three images of the band members were going to be placed.

Audiene Feedback Voicethread

This is the link for our voicethread

After analysing the results that we recieved we gathered up some of the questionnaires and analysed them on a voicethread. Also, we now have an action plan as to what we have to do next to improve our music video, Digipack and advert.

Action plan for music video:
 - Make the choruse more upbeat
 - Change the beginning and get rid of the narrative
 - Make quicker cuts

Action plan for our advert:
 - Add key information e.g. where to buy album, how much etc...
 - Make it more fun as it's currently 'boring'

Action plan for digipack:
 - Tone down some of the colours as they are bright and at the moment look 'Popish'
 - Add the band members images, possibly to the back of the digipack

Once we have made these changes we feel they are appropriate for our target audience.

Pictures from the photoshoot and to confirm that we filmed

We took this picture for our digipack as we thought it was a nice background image and the location would link with our music video as this is where some of the scenes are set. The reason we could'nt  use this picture is because the two female members of the band look more dominant over the male member of the band and he is meant to be the main member.

This shot is a better formation as it shows the male member of the band is the main person in the band. The downside of the image is the framing and the mise en scene as there is cars and a lampost in the background ruining the image.

This picture is slightly better than the one above as it shows the order of importance in the band. Once again the shot is unusable as the framing could be better and there is people, cars etc in the shot.

Evidence of creating the Digi-packs

Digi-pack/CD front cover ideas

This was my idea for a front cover. I designed it like this as I thought it would be nice to show the band on the front cover. However I don't think it fits the genre very well and is not very eye catching. This is why for our final draft we are thinking of doing something more animated

This is my first draft of the digi-pack/CD cover. We wanted it animated as we were inspired by Noah and the Whales album covers. I personally did not like the background as I thought it was too plain and did not suit the genre.

This is our first draft of the front cover of the digi-pack that we created as a group. We worked off of Callum's original design and added the bright colourful shapes to the background to make it more eye catching to the audience. Callum personally does not like the design as he feels some of the colours clash and did not fit the Indie-Pop image. However, Georgie and Gemma both loved the front cover and decided this should be a possible design.

Camera shots that we have used.

These are just some of the shots that we have used in our music video. We used some of these as it fits into the conventions of a music video but some shots also break convention.

My design for the cd digipack cover

My first design for the CD digipack cover

The first design that I decided on drawing was having the name o the band in the top left hand corner. The image would be taken on a sunny day as that reflects our band. I would also have it set in a wooded area as this is different and is what indie bands are about.

I would like the image to focus on three tress and each band member would hide behind each tree. They would each poke their heads around the side of the tree as this would look fun. I chose to do my design like this as I felt it was different and having looked at other Indie bands cd covers I realised that this type of shot had not been done before.

It would also look very vintage and have vintage old style looking colours. This would then stick to the conventions of Indie bands as this is what they also do, such as The Arctic Monkeys and Noah and the Whale.

Genre Indie Ideas

I collected pictures from magazines of anything to do with the Indie genre and put them all together. We can use this to look at get ideas from of how we can make our video, poster and digi - pack in the indie genre. It can give us ideas for style so we know how we should dress and what sort of camera angles or props would be effective to use.

Music video distribution

Music video distribution

·       The only way to distribute music videos before computers and the internet was to show them on the television
·       Then as time went on you could get special edition discs where you could put a cd into your computer and watch the music video for the song
·       Then the website YouTube was set up and people could watch music videos on there
·       As a result of the internet audiences are now becoming fragmented as there are so many ways that they can watch music videos and with the introduction of smart phones it became a lot harder
·       Smart phones meant that you can get apps on your hone where you can access the internet and YouTube where you can watch music videos on your phone
·       The music downloader Itunes is where you can also buy music videos for you Ipod where you can watch music videos on the go

Due to audiences being fragmented it can bee seen as easier to get people to watch your music video as there are now so many places where you can distribute your video. It is sure that everyone will see your video.

Censorship

Censorship

·       In the 1980’s many music videos were banned as they were deemed too ‘revealing’. An example of this is Duran Duran’s ‘Girls on Film’ as there were topless women and they were mud wrestling. As a consequence of this it was banned by the BBC
·       In the 1990’s again some music videos were banned by the BBC due to the ‘revealing nature’ and an example of this is Madonna’s videos as they were seen as quite sexual. Also, Michael Jacksons video ‘They Don’t Care About Us’ was banned by the BBC and MTV. This is because they felt that there was an underlying anti semantic message and he was also inappropriately touching himself
·       In the era of the 2000’s the Robbie Williams music video – Rock DJ – was censored before the watershed as it showed the singer peeling his flesh off and was deemed unsuitable to view during the day. However, after the watershed it could be watched uncensored. In the Dominican Republic people would not watch the video as they felt that it stood for Satanism. Eric Prydz ‘Call on me’ was tried to be banned as it shows women exercising in a provocative way. T.A.T.U and ‘All the things she said’ was also tried to be banned as they two singers indulge in an extremely passionate kiss but there never was a ban
·       In 2010 many of Lady Gaga’s videos have had to have been censored as they showed too much nudity. Also Rhianna’s SnM video had to be banned in some Countries and on YouTube had to have an 18+ certificate as it showed the singer chaining the man up and indulges in a lesbian kiss
·       Throughout the years not much has changed on the censorship lines except as the years have gone on you can now see more suggestive music videos and women and men are dressed in small amounts of clothing

The BBC which banned some music videos from being shown

T.A.T.U - raunchy video which was banned in some Countries

The Internet

The Internet

·       The internet was extremely helpful for music videos as there are social networking sites such as YouTube which is where music videos are distributed and are free to watch all over the World. It is free marketing for bands
·       But before YouTube there was a website called Napster – this was a site where people could share video files
