Band Planning

3 group members
2 females 1 male – breaks conventions – part of USP - normally in bands there are more males than females. It also breaks conventions because if there are females in a band they are usually the singers but in our band the male is the singer.

Target audience
The target audience for our band is 15-28 year olds as when conducting our audience research this was the age range that listened to indie pop the most. Also, our band will appeal to our target audience because our music relates to issues that are going on in the World between the 15-28 years old age group such as love, loss etc...

Male 1
Ryli London - singer - 18 years old
Female 1
Asha Clarke - guitar - 19 years old
Female 2
Partridge Jones - drummer - 20 years old

Genre
Indie pop

Band name
Deray – It’s another word for Disturbance and confusion. This works with the indie pop genre because Indie Pop bands and different and are quite rebellious which reflects the title of our band.

Clothing

Female 1.
Asha is going to be wearing skinny jeans and a checkered top as this is a stereotype of Indie pop bands. It will also make Asha look quite manly as this is the look we are going for. She is also the guitar player and breaks conventions because this is not typical of women in Indie Pop bands.

Female 2.
Partridge is going to be wearing a simple more girly look to Asha. She is going to be wearing things such as leggings with a stripy loose fitting top and a cropped denim jacket with a trilby and vans.

Male.
Ryli is going to be wearing the stereotypical clothing of an indie boy. He will wear things such as chinos, a graphic print tee and plimsoles. The stereotypical look is put together but slightly messy, this is shown through their hair, clothing and body language. His hair will be medium length and a little messy.

Ryli London.

Ryli London is from the small town of Potters Bar in Hertfordshire. Born on 9th February 1992, he is the youngest of the band members but seen as the most mature of the bunch. He has had quite an easy upbringing growing up in a middle class family with 2 other siblings called Skye and Jerome. In 2002, the family suffered a major shake when his father was seriously injured in the infamous Potters Bar train derailment. He attended Mount Grace Secondary School studying BTEC music, Business Communications and Catering at GCSE grade before leaving the school to follow his musical career. He met fellow band members Asha and Partridge as their parents were all close friends from school. They soon formed the band in 2007 and the rest is history.

Asha Clarke

Asha is 19 years old and currently lives in Borhamwood in Hertfordshire. Asha was born in Liverpool and moved to Potters Bar when she 12 years old because her mother died and her father moved down South to try and start a new life with his family. Asha is from a lower class family and has had a tough upbringing. Asha is one of 6 children and she is the oldest out of all of them. When she first moved to Potters Bar she was bullied by a lot of people but Ryli, now fellow band member, helped her.  Asha knew fellow bandmate Ryli through their fathers being old friends from school. Asha tried to commit suicide but Ryli helped her get her life back on track as she wasn't coping well without her mother as she was trying to be a mother figure to her fellow siblings. Asha then became friends with Partridge and in 2007 was when the trio decided to make a band and they have never looked back since!

Partridge Jones

Partridge is 20 years old and comes from a well-off classy family in Harpenden. She attended a private school throughout her years of education and achieved excellent grades in all her subjects but her main interest has always been music. She has been playing the drums since a very young age, her mum and dad bought her first drum kit on her 6th birthday and she received drum lessons while at school.  She always got everything she wanted as a child. It was in 2007 that she became part of the band with Ryli and Asha. They met through their parents who used to go to school together. Even though Partridge comes from a well off family she has never been as posh as her parents and her image is very Indie so she fits in well with the band. She doesn’t drink and is against drugs and has always dreamt of being part of a successful band and now is her chance.

Unique Selling Point

The unique selling point of the band is that all members are activists. They do not agree with drugs or alcohol and they are trying to get the message out that these things are bad and dangerous. They are trying to persuade people to not take drugs or drink alcohol. They disagree with anything that is illegal or considered bad. This makes them different to other Indie bands as in a lot of Indie bands the band members tend to drink and some do take drugs. This makes the band stand out as they are different and could attract a wider audience as people will realise they are trying to do something good by creating a message that drugs and alcohol are bad and people might respect them for trying to portray this message as it is not what Indie bands are usually like.

Let's dance to joy division lyrics:

^ ^ These are the lyrics to the song that Deray are going to release as their single. The reason why we have chose this song as listening to the lyrics and reading them has shown us that it is a typical Indie Pop song. In our audience research we found out that people like a band that is different and our unique selling point is to be very 'save the World like' and to coincide with this we have chose this song as it is very uplifting and has a very fast beat. The song is saying that even when everything is going wrong they are still very happy and this can also be seen through the bands past as Asha's mother died but now she is happy. It is also about taking risks as they everything could go wrong but they don't care and Deray want to show this through their music.

Promotional Picture Plans

The scans below are rough plans for the images we hope to use in the promotional items we have to create.

NME TV 2010 logo.png

We have chosen NME to show our music video as this is where most indie bands would have their music played. the Tv channle is aimed at the same target audience as we are aiming for. NME was launced in November 2007 as has been a very popular channel for Indie audiences in the UK. We know that the channel is popular with our target audience as when asked what was their favourite music channel 60% mentioned NME.

Distribution

Now with the internet there a lot of different ways bands/artists can distribute their music other than just in shops. A lot of people now, especially younger people, don’t actually buy CDs from the shops anymore and prefer to download them off the internet. As our target audience is younger people it would be good for us to distribute mainly on the internet. Youtube is a good way of new bands getting themselves known especially if they do not have much money as they can still get themselves worldwide without any cost and once their noticed they can start distributing their music properly and selling their music. Itunes is a very popular place for young people to get their music from as it is easy for them to do as they can download the songs straight to their computers or ipods, etc. Therefore, Itunes would be a very good place for us to distribute our band’s album. Some people do like to go out and buy the CDs still though and if we were to distribute our album in a shop then HMV would be the sort of shop that we would distribute our CD too as they sell a large variety of different types of music.

The Wombats

2003 in Liverpool England was when the 3 piece indie band, The Wombats, formed. Matthew Murphy is vocals, guitar and keyboards. Tord Knudsen is on bass and vocals. Dan Haggis is on drums and vocals. They all met at the Liverpool institute of performing arts and the band has currently released two albums. The first called A guide to love loss and desperation. (2007) The second album is called This modern glitch. (2011) When they met at school they had an opportunity given to them where they performed to over 20,000 people in China and it was their first gig outside of the UK. They became big hits in the Far East as a result of this. Since then they have performed at many gigs throughout the UK and many Countries around the World.
