Music Video

Vogue music video

Analysing this music video gave me some ideas of things we could include in our music video. The main thing I have decidied we should include in our music video is close-ups of the main singer to show they are the main focus. This is a good idea because it shows clearly who the main part of the band is.

Music Video analysis

Nirvana -  Smells like Teen Spirit
Camera Angles
Long shot on the crowd shows that the teenagers are rebellious and shows that they are carefree.
Editing
The video starts off with a slow cutting rhythm and picks up to match the tempo of the song.
Sound
The tempo of the music matched the speed of the cutting rhythm. There were no other sound effects.
Mise-en-scene
Dark lighting represents the part atmosphere.
Set in a school gym to represent the teenager angle.
Teenagers rocking out shows carelessness.
Representation
The video represents teenagers as careless and rebellious. This is shown through them having a party in the school gymnasium and matches to what the song is about.
Narrative
The narrative is that teenagers have a careless spirit and show that they are rebels. It also shows in the video certain teenager stereotypes.
Character
The video shows majority of stereotypes of teenagers, these include geeks, cheerleaders and jocks.
Role of Musician
The artists perform to the crowd in the video and to the camera.
Use/Breaking of Conventions
Uses conventions when cutting the video to the same tempo as the song.
Analysing this music video helped me create my own video by giving me ideas on what types of shots to use. With this particular video they uses a good cutting rhythm to match the song.

REM Everybody Hurts music video analysis:

CCTV footage of the traffic jam

Video: REM – Everybody Hurts
Camera angles
There is a medium shot of the CCTV cameras that are showing the traffic jams and this represents how everybody has come together because of the song.
There was also a high shot of the traffic jam.
There was also a 2 shot of the people in the car when the music starts playing as it shows that the music is bringing them together.
Editing
The editing starts out very slow and then it goes to a faster cutting rhythm.
Sound
Very slow, sets a calm mood and goes well with the narrative being shown.
The music is very slow throughout the song.
Mise en scene
People in cars being stuck in a traffic jam. On a motorway. Men in suits.
Representation
Represents people who are stuck in traffic as being the same. They all want to get somewhere, all have places they need to be and are all thinking about someone/something.
Narrative
The narrative is showing a highway in heavy traffic jam and you see and read all of the people’s thoughts and how similar they are. How the traffic jam is joining them together. The narrative is telling you how hard life can be no matter what background you come from or how much money you have, everyone finds life hard and you can see this through the clothes characters are wearing etc…. Everyone gets out of their cars and join together and make the news.
Character
The men in suits are the band. The rest of the ‘extras’ in the video are telling the audience the story of how all people hurt and feel the same at times. You aren’t alone.
Role of musician
You see them singing in the middle of the song. They are wearing suits so they stand out and people know who they are.
They only start singing in the last minute of the song.
Use/breaking conventions

There is no change in setting, usually in music videos there is always a change in settings.

High shot of the traffic jam

2 shot in the car

Long shot of cars and also shows lyrics/mans thoughts
